This appears to be widespread.

My mother was (for a while) head of the New York Alliance for the
Public Schools.  One of the findings is that most people who have kids
in school think that the school their kid attends is better than most
public schools.

This is, I think, partly the result of the 'no news is good news'
phenomenon.  Of course, it may also be partly wishful thinking.
