Just thought I'd give you guys a follow up to this one. Turned out to be the motherboard slowing down if I put two sticks of RAM on it. As soon as I removed one, it booted 2.1.2 (and then 2.2) fine under 2 minutes. Tested all possible scenarios with the slots and memory sticks, all with the same result: 2 sticks = slow down; 1 stick = fine.
