My power button is probably due to the fact I have a UPS backup installed.
You can also right click on the lower task bar in a blank space, click on
properties, and customize the notification area. Scroll to the power
selection and then pick always show icon and notifications. Then you will
be able to turn on the power option that controls the USB ports power.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Going Bonkers

I did a quick Internet search for Windows 7 Power Management.

Windows 7 Power Management is pretty complex, with many possible settings:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/features/power-management.aspx

The Device Manager Properties for USB hubs on my Win 7/64 desktop has a
"Power" tab, rather than a "Power Management" tab. This is probably a
result of the power option in Control Panel, which was customized by Dell,
the manufacturer.

To get to the power options, type "power" in the Win 7 Start Menu search box
and select "Power Options" from the list that pops up.

No battery icon appears in the lower-right ("notification") area of my
AC-powered Win 7 desktop, which doesn't surprise me.

Another easier way to get to the USB settings is to click on the lower right
task bar for the power setting. (Looks like a battery.)

> Disable the power saving features on your computer! Specifically,
> open Windows Device Manager (in the Control Panel), select Universal
> Serial Bus Controllers then open each USB Root Hub and Generic Root
> Hub entry you find. In the hub entries, select the "Power Management"
> tab and
> *uncheck* the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this
> device to save power."
