I also feel this is the problem, as you say some apps also need 32 bit support, 
notably Skype. But it would be nice to recompile the utility on an X86_64 
platform, as this is now becoming the common platform.

Installing the 32-bit compatibility libraries (ia32-libs) should solve the 
problem with 64-bit Linux. I expect you will find many Linux apps will require 
the 32-bit libraries.
