It wasn't a big surprise but, even so, the reality is like being punched in the gut.
Our e-mail correspondence must be close to a thousand since I first met him here 11 years ago. And then there were the chats by telephone as worked on various projects, but we never met face to face. Even so, I was remarkably moved by his presence, good humor and willingness to do whatever he could to help others. Perhaps the one thing that sticks most in my memory was the hearty THANKS PAL! closing he offered with such obvious sincerity every time we spoke or wrote to each other.
