I do it that way myself ... each K3 (+P3) has an RS-232 A/B switch on
it.  The computer serial port has an A/B/C/D switch that connects to
each of the A/B switches, the programming cable for the XG3 and for
now the LP-100 (but normally my general purpose test port).
