Mike, Unless you are dead set on doing that in a hardware interface, try Ham Radio Deluxe or the N4PY software - what you want to achieve is already programmed into them (or can be customized for that function).
If you wish to create a hardware interface, I might suggest that the easiest path is to have the new hardware buttons buttons interface with a microprocessor that in turn sends the appropriate commands ot the K2 through the KIO2.
