I see it quite differently. The K2 was a kit, designed to be built by mere mortals, not machines. The DB-series connectors are widely available from good industrial sources and are easy to work on. There's also the matter of panel real estate. Yes, there are other connectors, but I can't think of a decent alternative that fits the above objectives.
