Both Google Mail and the webmail client of my ISP work fine for that.  There is a checkbox next to each email  ... you double click the email itself if you want to read it, or you single click the box to mark if for delete if you don't.

I really don't see what the issue here is.  Unless he's talking about the digest, and in that case he's trying to defeat the purpose of the digest ... which is to aggregate all posts into a single one.
