A long time ago, velocity ["ribbon"] mics were common in broadcast,
apparently they're not any more. Really boosted the bass if you close
talked them. At 17, I could crawl way up close to the RCA 44 at the
board and sound like James Earl Jones.

Is that really true? If you looked inside all of your local AM broadcast
stations, all you'd see are dynamic microphones.
I'm not sure why most headsets have electret mics. Maybe it's because they have
a higher output which lessens the need for a lot of preamplification? I don't
know.
