Since I didn't notice any "Me too" responses, I started poking deeper
into this side of things.
Eventually I noticed the display would come back if I changed view
levels (via the eyeball icon)

It didn't seem right to have to flush the registry files every time
and the only thing left I could think of was the electricPrefs.xml
file as sitting between the registry and program
I had been carrying it forward through many versions (I think since
2007?) and when I examined it in detail, I noticed a lot of
accumulated "junk".

I rebuilt this file from scratch. I copied the individualized key
bindings and color/pattern changes almost line by line and tossed most
everything else.
This seems to have cleared up the problem - I've not been able to
repeat the problem since I've done this
At the moment, I'm going to conclude my electricPrefs.xml file was
corrupted in some manner.

I don't know enough software structure to even venture a guess as to
why I had the problem with 9.01 and not 8.11 - it was the same
electricPrefs file

Thanks for letting me work through this in a public forum.
Now I get to see if I can incorporate some annular rad-tolerant
transistor structures and SiC technologies... :)
