Patrick,
1. have the os you want to install on a thumb/flash drive in the usb port
2. have your sd card in the slot
3. plug the board in and press F2 to get to the UEFI screen. if you do not hit
F2 fast enough you will see the interactive
shell screen. if you see this scree type exit and hit return. that should
take you to the UEFI menu screen. if not you
can unplug the board and start again , remember to hit F2 quickly after power
up. once at menu screen.
4. scroll down and select boot manager
5. hit enter and you will be at boot options screen.
6. scroll down and select EFI usb device.
7. hit enter.
8. at this point it should bring up the install screen of whatever os is on the
thumb drive and install to the sd card.
9. after install process reboot, take out thumb drive, sd card should boot.

i'm pulling it from memory and think sd card is default install location . hope
this helps get you started

thanks, probably I could investigate a bit more how to load/configure the UEFI
shell for different OS usage.
It is more a side project right now for me, to have some small workstations for
embedded programming/network programming.

Anyway, my current situation is that have multiple USB sticks and one USB flash
drive. I think the SATA approach is nice, but compared with a big computer,
there is no 12V power supply for the HDD (not sure, if it is 12V, but the
connector from PC power supplies look like higher voltage)

Anyway, next time slot for debugging for me will probably be the weekend.

Patrick,
as far as hardware connections you can use the onboard sata connector or use a
lure. in my case i bought a silverjaw lure.
http://www.tincantools.com/MinowBoard_Max_Add-ons/Silverjaw_Lure.html
and i used a samsung 850 on the m2 / msata connector.
as far as the steps to setup the flashdrive with bsd i'm gonna have to step
through the process again myself since it has been over a year since the last
time i did it and do not off the top of my head remember all the steps however
i'll update tomorrow afternoon after i've gone through the process again.

Hi,

I was playing a bit more with the Minnowboard last weekend.

a) I tried a FreeBSD install onto a USB Flashdrive but the boot did not work
yet, maybe I miss something. I was basically stuck in the UEFI shell, only now
seeing the fs0: command to try booting from the new drive.

b) Instead of working with a USB flash drive, the SATA drive option sounds
interesting. Yet, I can't quickly see what cables I need, esp. for powering the
SATA drive. Anyone has pointers here?

Thanks a lot!

Patrick
