Replying to my own post, looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows glx
module
is not loading and the sim link to
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia/libglx.so.331-20 is broken.
Repairing the symlink should fix it.

Strange, you are the second person to report this.

http://elrepo.org/bugs/view.php?id=425

I am unable to replicate the issue - the symlink is fine on my system
after updating.

$ ll /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia/
total 9588
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 16 Nov 8 16:18 libglx.so -> libglx.so.331.20
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 9815912 Nov 8 15:52 libglx.so.331.20

Did you reboot after updating the nvidia drivers? That was the cause
of the issue for the previous report.

Phil

Yes, I did reboot and now I have fixed the broken symlink and the
libglx.so.331.20 module now loads. The GUI now shows compiz thinks
there is 3D support but there are none of the wobbly windows or cube
effects working.

In var/log/Xorg.0.log I see some error messages that appear to say the
monitors do not support "Nvidia 3D stereo". Not sure exactly what it
is trying to tell me but the monitors functioned well with 3D and
previous kmod-nvidea-325.15.

Replying to my own post again. ;-/

I disabled compiz settings in System>Preferences>Desktop Effects
followed by Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. Then went back to
System>Preferences>Desktop Effects, reselected compiz and wobbly windows
as well as windows on a cube and everything works again. Guess I will
call this solved and wait for the next episode.

Glad you got it working and thanks for posting back.

Is this the first time you've updated with desktop effects enabled? I've never tested the packages with desktop effects so can't really offer much insight here.

Phil

No, I have updated the kmod-nvidia package at least a couple times on this same hardware with no change in desktop effects. I have had the broken symlink issue on each update but with different symptoms. On previous occasions the GUI fails to come up at all as a result of failure to load libglx.so. The latest update did not kill the GUI but did apparently kill desktop effects.
