FWIW, the key in Gnome apps on my system to enter alternate input modes
is Shift-Space, not Control-Space.  I use a Japanese locale though; it
would seem silly to have different hot keys for different locales, but
maybe there's some sort of history behind it?

[I'm not sure where this stuff is configured though...]
