Been looking at my current filters and no partial matches there. The only thing 
I noticed is when specifying an address, you don't need the full address, any 
entire word in the email will do. I guess that's what I had in mind. I played a 
bit and couldn't get any other partial matches to work.

But here's a nice one with booleans and negation in from:

  from:((foo OR bar) AND !b...@foobar)
