Does that look like a solution? Sure, it looks OK when that middle pane is
showing only two colums, but it wouldn't work well for email. I'm trying out

It wasn't contrived at all. All I did was turn on the other two columns.
Keep in mind that in my mail list widnow I have way more than 4 columns
showing.
As for Mail, the issue with the individual message view is that there is
no way to go to another message without going back to the message list
window, which means the window needs to be on screen unless I am only
reading one message.
