How more unique than unique can you get? OS X dictionary:

FWIW, I thought the idea of an envelope/several envelopes with a letter
opener on was fine, although envelopes have been done often before.
One of the mail program icons I liked most was GNUMail's. That uses a
pillar box. I suppose not all countries use pillar boxes for post
boxes, and those that do don't necessarily use red. But, as you say,
there's recognition "through use". And red stands out (as Turner knew)
and would catch the eye in the Dock.
GNUMail used an actual photograph, so the proportions didn't really
suit - too long and thin. But a drawn image that takes liberties with
the proportions could be good.
