No, the only available font should be the recipient's preferred font.
And how do you propose to magically send that to everyone? A telepathy
plugin?
He said the *recipients* font. Not the sender's font. There's no need
to send a font anywhere. That's the point. I choose to use Monaco (on
OS X 10.5). You may choose to use Courier New, Helvetica, Times, or
even Wingdings if you like. The legibility of the e-mail you receive is
entirely up to you, the recipient.
This is as opposed to HTML mail, in which the sender has the ability to
declare font styles to use with CSS (or the <font> element). In this
case, the default legibility of the mail is up to the sender. The
recipient can override it if they know how, but for me, and I believe
many other people, that is unacceptable and is one of the many reasons
we prefer plain text.
What happens when someone uses a monospaced font to line things up, but the
recipient has chosen a proportional font?
For plain text, the convention is monospace, especially for technical
discussion which frequently includes ascii art or other things that need
the text to line up. You may choose to use a proportional font if you
like, but then you can expect things to not line up.
(Maybe we could include a feature that lets the user easily switch
between monospace and proportial fonts, so they can default to a more
proportional font if that's what they prefer, but switch to monospace if
desired for a specific email. I wouldn't use it myself, since I use
monospace for everything. But I know some people prefer proportional fonts.)
Fuck reading it, MY FONT UBER ALLES.
No need for foul language. Let's keep this civil, please.
