Although, I'm now doing another round of testing. I just put back in a CD I burned yesterday, one that didn't work, then worked on another machine, then worked on this one... and it is back to not working. So that might rule out the 2nd machine influence (and just leaves it as one hell of a freaky coincidence).
Is it possible that some of the CDs are slightly warped? And that the drive on the other Mac is somehow pressing the CDs flat? The pressure wouldn't be enough to straighten the CDs permanently, so they would eventually return to their warped shape and the symptoms would return.
