There is nothing stopping someone from writing a new email client that is 
very similar to Emailer. No one has bothered to do so.

Sort of, I hacked Emailer itself to add new features or change some 
features. Someone can not take Emailer's source code and create a direct 
OS X port of it without Apple's permission. Even my hacks are a bit of a 
grey zone if I am allowed to do them or not. I think I get away with it 
simply because Apple either doesn't know they exist, or don't care 
because it has no impact on their business plans or sales.

That is a good question. I can't answer that. I don't know why someone 
hasn't written an application that is very similar to Emailer.
