Dear Emailers:

I am resending OT to tell you a little story that I hope some of you
would be interested in hearing. Read no further if you have enough to do!

Someone on one of my lists emailed me directly and suggested a way to
minimize the size of the OSX system folder on my G3 laptop to gain HD
space. They suggested using Monolingual to trash language files. The
Read-Me warns to be careful not to trash _any_ English language subsets -
one has to reinstall OSX to get them back. It also warns not to trash
the Roman keyboard but says one need only copy "it from another Mac to
the correct location" if one finds one has accidentally.

So, last evening, with my heart in my throat, I meticulously followed the
instructions. I didn't trash the Roman keyboard because there wasn't
even one listed.

However, this morning, typing into Safari's keyboard I found myself
creating Asian characters! What a weird sensation that was - we are so
used to seeing exactly what we type appear in front of our eyes as if
emanating from our brains directly - I was flaggergasted.

After recovering, I looked on my iMac and found Keyboard Layouts in two
Libraries but the folders were empty!(Can someone please explain how to
access these files if one ever needed to copy them?) But since Emailer,
Tex-Edit Plus and the Address Book were all fine on the laptop, it didn't
seem to be a system or user wide problem anyway, so then I had the
brilliant idea that it might be a corrupted preference file - found the
one for Safari (listed under app.safari) and trashed it.

Very odd problem solved. I am quite proud of myself! After all these
years I am getting the hang of trouble-shooting! (Thanks in large part to
reading the advice on this list for so many years!)

Cheers,

Tannis
