Chris, as mentioned in my long winded account, Restarting from the Menu 
Bar (Special) created the same problem - ONLY a forced Restart worked.

Actually, Garry and Martin, the printer was on, plugged into a USB port 
that works in OSX as well as when the machine is booted into OS9.  The 
laptop also prints in OSX when the printer is plugged into the  iMac 
through printer sharing. The printer (Epson R300) has OS 9 and X printer 
drivers installed on the laptop.  It is a mystery to me why it will work 
booted into OS9 and OSX but not in Classic.

But I am happy to let it remain a mystery and just cut and paste in the 
future!
