You never told us which computer you are working with (or did I miss it) and being OS 9 bootable has nothing to do with being partitioned or not. It is a hardware function of older Macs to be OS 9 bootable. So long as there is a functioning OS9 System Folder it will boot, then you could test it in OS9, if your computer is old enough. If it works there, it will work in OS X. Let us know some more.
