Tyler, I access EarthLink through TW Roadrunner, and NEVER had to use SMTPAUTH with EarthLink unless I was connecting to the Internet through the network of someone else.
I have been using multiple e-mail accounts with EarthLink and I've never needed to use AUTH. I guess it's possible, but I wouldn't imagine the dialup should work differently. It could however, be an OS 8.1 problem. OS 9.x changed the version of Open Transport and TCP/IP, and EarthLink might require the older versions of those to use AUTH, but that's just speculation on my part.
