As you see there is no "LSHandler" in CE so Tiger cannot use a nonexistant handler in the prefernce. > On or about 12/10/2005 4:18 PM Jay AKA [EMAIL PROTECTED] eruditely mused the following: >>Jay noted that >> >>>Even better, the freeware system preference "More Internet", which you can >>>find at Version Tracker, lets you select preferred applications for every >>>type of file. >> >On 12/9/05, Julian declared: > >>What would be really useful would be a means of selecting Emailer as the >>default application for when one clicks on an email address link. Last May when this utility was mentioned I contacted the developer because I could not make it stick either and FYI I quote the full email and reply below. The problem, on looking at it again today is that it is does not seem at all possible because there is no Launch Handler for Emailer. If you look at the preference file 'com.apple.launchServices.plist' and expand it you will see a LSHandler mentioned for 'mailto', in my case #3, but there is no such item in Emailer for the preference to latch onto. All the LSHandlers look a bit like a reverse URL. So even though we can select Emailer it just won't stick because the appropriate LSHandler does not exist. That figures due to CEs age. my longer winded solution, as I mentioned, is to just use Control Click and select the email address, then paste it into a new email. Yes, I would love to solve this problem too but Apple seems to have shut us out on this one because of the way the LSHandler works. --quote On May 20, 2005, at 12:33 AM, Karl Winkelmann wrote: > Someone on the Emailer list suggested using your RCDefaultApp to try > and solve the mailto problem I am having since upgrading to Tiger. > > Having used Claris Emailer for many years, and not finding any close > competition, I noticed that even after I installed your RCDefaultApp > preference pane I was unable to make Emailer stick as an alternate > mailto application, even though I was able to add it to the list. > > It seems to me that either Tiger or RCDefaultApp will not allow me to > select a Classic application as the default instead only allowing me to > use a Mac OS X application. > > Any comments or suggestions welcome. Interesting. As of a recent security fix to both Panther and Jaguar, and therefore I assume Tiger too, applications which have never been launched will not seem to "stick". In many cases, the setting actually has been made -- if you try to actually open a mailto: link, you tend to get the panel with "this application is being run for the first time" prompt, and then afterwards when you go back into RCDefaultApp, you can see the application actually selected. At other times, you need to actually run the application yourself before it can be set. It is entirely possible that Apple messed up dealing with Classic applications in all of this... maybe there is no way to set the "application has been launched" flag for them. In Panther, it does seem difficult to get Classic applications to show up in the list now (they used to, with no problem) but you can still force them and they will work. One other thing would be to see if changes are made to your ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist after you try to force the mailto setting. If none of these tricks work, then you may have found a bug, and should probably report it to Apple. They may have overlooked Classic apps in some of these security fixes.
