For what its worth (and it may not be much), when I first got my iMac with OSX, I had occasion to call Apple Tech support to get an answer to some question about getting started, and the guy told me that it needed to be shut down for a while once per day. I can't recall why.
But since it boots up so fast anyway, its fine with me to shut down when I go to bed, and then get it back up after I get up.
