Indeed, I'm a member of the Yorkshire Mac User Group (YMUG - the largest UK Mac group) and I've tried to encourage them to use a forum, instead of a mailing list, but my exhortations were met with blank refusal. I think some (many) people need to feel part of an exclusive group and maybe they don't want to post in a public forum.
I prefer mail lists over BBS forums simply because I'm lazy. Forums, like you say, require me to go to them, and that takes more work on my part. I'm a huge fan of less work :-)
So, what are people's thoughts about an Apple Mail email list?
I'd join. You can set one up using Google Groups or Yahoo Groups if you want free hosting of the mail list.
