I'm afraid that this discussion, along with recent posts about using peripherals, is leading to the decision that I made in 12/06: it's time for a modern Mac.
I _loved_ my WallStreet, and rather liked my souped-up 8500. I preferred OS 9 to OS X. I preferred the WallStreet's 1024 x 768 display over the MacBook Pro's 15" 1440 x 900 display. But now, about 10 months later, I am very comfortable with OS X, with Entourage for email, and with the MacBook Pro and the iMac (both Intel Core 2 Duo). Upgrading to the Intel Macs took a bit of planning, a bit of archiving, a bit of file sharing, and a careful step-by-step approach. It also required me to purchase some new software. But really you can get by with either no software other than that which comes with the Mac, or by adding MS Office 2004 ($149.00 for the Student-Teacher edition). I thought I would need to use the OS 9 Macs quite a lot. But now I rarely even turn them on. At the time I bought the new Macs, my also beloved peripherals all died simultaneously: HP 4Mp laser printer, Apple LaserWriter IINT, Panasonic inkjet fax, Canon photocopier PC-11. With a deep breath, I replaced them all with a single Brother MFC-8860 DN combo laser printer, fax, copier, scanner (with Ethernet). It does duplex printing and sorting, too. I am quite pleased with it in general. I am OK with the scanner part -- wish it had TWAIN support, but otherwise is OK. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roger S.
