For whatever reason, it seems Spotlight indexing interferes with processing incoming mail. The preference change fixes the problem permanently. It has worked for me on both 10.4.3 and 10.4.11, so 10.4.9 is 'bracketed'. Emailer messages can't be indexed by Spotlight anyway, so little (or nothing) is lost.
