This sounds like the wireless card may not be reconnecting to the network fast enough. If you have poor signal or interference from other devices (microwave oven, medical equipment, other wireless networks, 2.4 GHz cordless phones, etc), you can have major problems getting the wireless to work.
If the wireless isn't connected, then Emailer most definitely can't connect. And Emailer tends to cache its DNS resolutions, so if it tries to connect when the wireless is down, and gets bad DNS info (ie: a server lookup fails), it may hang on to that bad DNS info for a while. Quitting Emailer will reset that cache.
So basically, what I am saying is, make sure the wireless is up and working BEFORE trying to use Emailer.
