Why would you like to use Perl only for prototyping and then move to Java?
What are the benefits of Java for you, especialy when you not already know
java well?

Sorry, no exact estimates. I am currently doing a lot of code cleanup, throw
away old Embperl 1 code, reorganizing the internal data structures, moveing
parts of the Perl code into C to speed up calls the Execute and creating a
Perl interface to all the objects/structures Embperl uses internaly. This
gives a lot new possibilties for writing better and easier code by
separation of code and desgin and allows to extent Embperl easily with Perl.
This will be in b6, maybe parts of it in b7. After this I don't plan to do
much an the Embperl core, but add some extentions like form validation and
multi language support. When enough people have tested this I will make a
stable release. This maybe in three month, but it highly depend on my
personal workload, on the number of good ideas people have for 2.0.

Having said this, 2.0b5 works fine for me and I already using it in
production.

Ideas, bug reports and patches are always welcome. Especialy when b6 is out
I would be happy if many people testing it, so we will find the remaing bugs
fast and release it as stable version.
