And as a "very imperfect integrator", I would add that the HAL has done wonders for the low level stuff. Another well known PC based system has negligible standardised infrastrucure at device level. HAL might not have been possible with the power available in the NIST days but certainly makes good use of it now. My interests at present include getting user interfaces with "power and beauty" and I feel confident that, if we do what we need with GUI, then the underlying clean interfaces make that work "future protected".
