Alex what I was getting at is that we really don't need HAL changed.
What you really seem to want is finer control over say homing.
That means we would need to changing homing to get and give more
info through HAL.
HAL is not a motion controller it's a communication system.

What you are asking ( talking homing ) is unusually to linuxcnc.
so yes it takes unusual work to get it done. or summit a feature request.

VDF over modbus is probably getting pretty common. I am not sure
how MACH addresses this. Do they have a general driver (component)
that you can adapt or does someone supply a driver for each supported
VDF. Making a general Modbus program is a little tricky.

If you wish to compare MACH to linuxcnc when it comes to configuration
show me a script that allows MACH to do true servo control.
Both pieces of software have limitations.

I'm not saying linuxcnc couldn't be easier to configure.
believe me I understand - I hack on PNCconf.
I'm just saying I don't understand how having HAL know about it's
components helps this.

Of course I have never seen a MACH script.

but I have enjoyed the discussion!
