For the relatively modest FPGAs I've been doing for the univeral stepper 
and PWM controllers,
for instance, synthesis, place&route, bitfile generation usually takes 
3-5 minutes.  I can
generally make an edit, recompile, program an EPROM and test in a 20 minute
cycle, when I actually know what gremlin I'm looking for.  When I have 
to think
"WHYYYY is it doing that???" then it takes longer.

The PRU really looks quite impressive for encoder counting and step 
generation.
Might just about put me out of business!
