I believe I found it!

An ls -lu confirmed that both linuxcnc.vars, and position.txt (which was an
empty file) were being touched by the run attempts. So, based on the hunch
that one or both were trashed by the initial "crashed the whole machine on
exit" event, I nuked both files, and it now will at least open the gui, and
quits clean on exit. And both files were regenerated, with content.

So now I'll need to remember that in the event of such a problem again,
those 2 files are 99% expendable.

Now, hopefully, I can go back to figuring out how to deal with a motor
controller whose input sensitivity curve is a Cast Iron Bitch. It takes at
least a 20% duty cycle out of the pwmgen to even make its felt friction
less in the forward direction, a huge do nothing threshold, and a very
quickly rising gain in a nearly exponentially rising curve above that.

That is a replacement board I bought last spring, and the so called
calibration procedure failed to make the translation from Chinese to
Chinglish... I got it from LMS, so I think I will call Mr. Woods tomorrow
& see if he has a better method.

Thanks guys.

Cheers, Gene
