NOTE: My comments were assuming you are trying to control physical
hardware with the BeagleBoard-xM.  The xM would make a great software
development platform to work on LinuxCNC for the ARM, in several ways
better than the 'Bone (faster CPU, more memory, built-in console &
'real' serial port).

Depending on what you're wanting to do, you could play with LinuxCNC
on the xM for a while, and get a 'Bone (or whatever other platform
looks appropriate) when things are far enough along to drive real
hardware.

If you're wanting to twiddle I/O pins and control a real machine, the
'Bone seems to be the best choice for now, with a BeBoPr cape or
something similar:

...but the LinuxCNC part is still "work-in-progress".
