Yes, you can run a machine with a PREEMPT_RT kernel, and one is
available pre-packaged in Debian Wheezy (and perhaps other
distributions, as well).  Performance is not as good as RTAI or
Xenomai, but using a distribution provided kernel is a pretty big plus.

With a generic kernel that has no real-time patches, you'd be best off
sticking with something like the sprinkler controller someone was
building, rather than anything that includes a servo loop.  The
latency numbers are horrid without _some_ sort of real-time patch.
