Yes, you can run a machine with a PREEMPT_RT kernel, and one is available pre-packaged in Debian Wheezy (and perhaps other distributions, as well). Performance is not as good as RTAI or Xenomai, but using a distribution provided kernel is a pretty big plus. Details and some performance numbers are available on the wiki page that tells you how to build it: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Debian_Wheezy_Linux-Rt_Compile_LinuxCNC With a generic kernel that has no real-time patches, you'd be best off sticking with something like the sprinkler controller someone was building, rather than anything that includes a servo loop. The latency numbers are horrid without _some_ sort of real-time patch. - -- Charles Steinkuehler char...@steinkuehler.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iEYEARECAAYFAlESerMACgkQLywbqEHdNFz+mwCeMeD08OTiCsJHh/NniY1iKTBQ fxUAnRhQmrREYR6zjsBkKactq3PzGQay =xymJ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Free Next-Gen Firewall Hardware Offer Buy your Sophos next-gen firewall before the end March 2013 and get the hardware for free!
