Greetings; I was advised that John Morris's new stuff was running on a 12.04 LTS install, where as a test install on 10.04-4 on my lappy wouldn't boot, the new kernel panic's about .6 seconds in, "can't mount sda1 as /boot (or root, I didn't take a pix)" I also had to do the sailors hornpipe on the left shift + ctl in order to get a grub screen at all.
So I dl the 12.04 LTS in amd64 flavor on the mills computer, and made a cd out of that .iso. Nothing on the lappy was precious so I told it to use the whole disk. Very early in the install, right after setting the keyboard to English, it asked if I wanted to download any upgrades as it installed, so I said yes. But despite having both a working cat5 plugged into its eth0 port and a LinkSys WNA3100 radio dongle plugged in, it couldn't find either port. The install proceeded but nagged me for a connection every 30 seconds. I tried both static settings (and the first time it rejected a 192.168.xx.xx address, then decided to accept it later), and dhcp for eth0, no deal. Finished, rebooted, and 3 hours later I have not succeeded in even getting it to ping either of the other 2 machines plugged into the same switch. It was all working in 10.04-4 LTS 2 days ago. Now, nothing I can do, will get 12.04 to assign an address, any address, to eth0 so it can be seen in an ifconfig output. eth0 on the lappy is 8139too hardware. wlan0 is disabled in the bios, as its a bcm4318, uses ndiswrapper & the bcmwlhigh5 combo, which falls over at 2 minute intervals, and has no security support. The radio dongle is a bcmxxxxx that Just Works(TM) once I get the pass phrase right. But I've not been able to even find the menu where it asks for a pass phrase. So, since its not getting anywhere this way, I'll do another re-install today but tell it no when it asks to download updates as it goes. Maybe after the install I can configure the networking to work. One thing that would help, is knowing the ubuntu 12.04 version of "sudo service network restart" which spits out a not no but hell no batch of error refusals, but gives no clue what the correct syntax is. I have a printout of the "Web UPDT" stuff to disable IPv6, but is that applicable to 12.04 too? I wish there was some reason for that, this machine has the same 10.04-4 LTS install as the mill and lathe has, but when I installed the lathe, I had to disable ipv6 before it would accept an ipv4 connection. Its still enabled, and happy as a clam on this box and the mills box. What the heck is the difference? How to go about successfully installing 12.04 advice would be much appreciated.
