You're on exactly the right track.

In one way all AnyIO FPGAs look the same to LinuxCNC: they all present a
16-bit register file for talking to the firmware.

In another way AnyIO FPGAs look different: the way they connect this register
file to LinuxCNC.

The hostmot2 driver system has a layer for connecting the FPGA's register file
to LinuxCNC (without caring what gets read and written to the FPGA registers)
and another layer for having intelligent conversations with the FPGA (without
caring how the communication happens).

The interface between these two layers is the hostmot2_lowlevel_io_t structure.
hm2_7i43 and hm2_pci both create a hostmot2_lowlevel_io_t structure for each
FPGA they find, and pass it up to the higher layer via hm2_register().

The fields of the struct should hopefully be well commented, ask if something
is unclear.
