This "null" is indeed difficult to interpret. Maybe an empty line somewhere?

Hm. I do not recall to have set this for the LiveCD.

The disks on those older machines are smaller - had to remove a few installed 
kernels and git checkouts (LinuxCNC among them) in order to download the image. 
:-)  But yes, I agree, it is not an ultimate problem, or should not be.

We can be. I just know at least one very competent individual who is shying 
away from the -dev list since he is not a programmer. And there are some many 
bits that we do not want to care about that are nonetheless important to 
someone starting up the LiveCD (background, images, icons, pre-installed 
software, selection of colours, ...) that I think we are losing out as a 
community if we discuss this here.
