I had an application where the tab used for bonding the sheet metal cover was spot welded to the cover. Inside were conductors protected at 125A. I was wondering how many spot welds might be needed to ensure that a ground fault wouldn't simply blow the spots off before tripping the breaker.

I wonder whether that actually happens. It seems to me that the points might, instead, melt and weld to the substrate. That's how spot-welding works. An experiment or three is indicated. -- OOO - Own Opinions Only. With best wishes.
