Gee, I could send a 16-byte packet, with start and stop bits, in 10 us! And, UARTs are full-duplex. I was thinking "what a pity it doesn't have SYN recognition", but it is ASYNC, so it doesn't need them. Most likely has 16450-style FIFOs, too, and 16 bytes, I'll bet. So, you can collect all 16 bytes of the packet in one burst. Definitely an interesting alternative, but the parallel port OUGHT to work right out of the box with no software changes (I hope).
