Well, I thought you were trying to mess with the amp because you thought it was the cause of the screw comp problem - since we found the bug, the amp is exonerated. I don't know enough about your amp to tell if you can "dumb it down" by cranking up the gain, but I have my doubts. There will still be feedback, and if you crank the gain you will probably just make it unstable.
