Your there - I found myself asking the same question once... > I'm looking for a primer to help me understand the > recommended or possible hardware configurations that EMC will run. Wiki will give you various componets and manufactures to choose from. Of course hardware covers several thing including the computer, video chip (can be a latency killer) and driver board/chip My setup consists of a Compaq Deskpro EN w/512Ram and an intel 825 video chip-. This was a throwaway from the IT department at work - They are happy for me to take the old boxes - they don't have to "think" about disposal then. For a driver board, I purchased the HobbyCNCpro Rev1 kit. Was my first experience in building anything remotely electronic. Its driving 3 205 oz-in steppers on a 3 axis wood router (48"X24"X4") > I will > be using stepper motors. For me, it meant I learned how to set up linux (have 3 boxes at home with it now (1 for me and 2 for the kids)), learned all about real time and how to make the computer bend to your needs (not the other way), and finally how to read and write simple GCode. All worthy endeavours (even for a hobby). I am presently looking to use one of the modules to correct for skew on my wood framed router on the y axis. Its certainly not plug and play. None of the motion control softwares are - otherwise they would not have forums, mailing lists and IRC channels dedicated to it. My suggestin to you is to load up the liveCD onto an old computer, signup for the mailing list (looks like thats done) and log into IRC anytime you are playing with your machine. If you are encoutering a problem, you are almost guranteed an answer quickly if you drop it into IRC chat. SWP, JMK, JE, CR and others are usulally ilding in there and will give you the nudges you need to get over the humps. Hope to hear your project as they develop.
