Hi Jim,

Since it will boot from a floppy at least it is not dead.
You might try setting the boot sequence (again) so CDROM is first;
nothing after that does you any good.
If you have a known good bootable CD then try that.
I have had trouble with some CD drives. Swapping drives often
fixes things. I have an old Sony that I find much more reliable than
some of the no-name drives.

Last but not least have you checked the MD5sum of the Ubuntu CD ( I'm  
assuming
that this is a download that you or someone else burned ).
