Thanks for the reply Ray. This is a very large machine with very large 
drives and motors. The travel limits are 120" in X, 58" in Y and 24 in Z. It 
has (3) 20 HP spindles on 24 inch centers. High quality servo replacements 
for this machine are quite expensive due to the torque requirements. Around 
12 to 15k per axis is about the norm I have been finding. Reusing these 
drives and motors would save a big chunk of green if I can get it to work. 
Do you see a problem with separate encoders with emc? I am not holding 
anyone accountable, just looking for opinions! The link I gave earlier from 
US Digital was only $195.00. I would have to buy 3 of them but that is still 
a far cry from the cost of new servos.
