The preferred way would be to add a velocity pin to the Motenc driver,
but that might be more work than you want.

Your current approach of using general DIO into a software-based
encoder counter is probably simplest, as long as your base-thread has
the speed to track it. For typical threading applications I think you
should be fine running that way, though it does seem like a waste of
the Motenc card capability.
