Apparently it doesn't play near as many piggish tricks with the system IRQ's, thereby giving much lower latency figures.

This might be a worthwhile check too. The only cirrus chipped card I ever had except the Jeronimo was a Picasso-II in a full blown Amiga A2k, with a 68040 board and 64 megs of dram. That card was usually capable of keeping up with the news videos available on the web in those days, say circa 2002 or so. But on a dialup, I had to download the video and play it from local storage since 56k can't do that and be watchable. > I looked through the discussion and had the same problem the newbie did. > I almost remember manually booting UNIX with arguments 30 years ago, > but I don't have a clue how to do it with the self starting LINUX of > today. My current box has 10.04 from the cd the guys were kind enough to make, and updated emc to 2.4.4 yesterday. Sitting overnight, it must be into swap by hundreds of megabytes, it takes emc about 4 or 5 minutes to start after I log in. Yep, htop says 155 megabytes is in swap. 10 days uptime so far. I had no such troubles with 6.06. > To avid this prolonged agony I would like to install simple Video cards > that do the job for the foreseeable future With EMC2 and my processors. > Anyone who could make an informing suggestion for such a card; > my heartfelt > Thanks > Don. I had an nvidia GF2 5200 in that box, but its $0.35 fan died & it burned a hole in the pcb, so next was the bottom of the barrel, an old old nvidia TNT-2, which gave good latency (for that box) for a couple of years, then the video started streaking. So now it has: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon X1650 Pro (rev 9e) 01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon X1650 Pro (Secondary) (rev 9e) Its a pig with the radeon or radeonhd driver, running up to 2 seconds behind the machine on screen, switching to the vesa driver made it so close to real time its a never mind. And the backtrace errors are less than I've had with any previous card in that box. But its a barn burner, needing a 4 pin drive cable plugged into the back end of it for power. It will last till the fan gets gummed up and slows. -- Cheers, Gene "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo.
