Hi Erik -  the handle housing is made eccentric to allow adjustment of
the worm and wheel engagement. Loosen the locks then adjust the
eccentric so it's just binding, (that should reduce nearly all the slack
in the handle) then rotate the handle. You'll find it goes loose and
tight in various places. Idea is to get that drag even all round, in
both directions.

You'll need to drive it for some time to get it smooth, a variable speed
electric drill on the handle shaft works :)

Beware though that shaft doesn't seize where it enters the eccentric.
Put plenty of oil on it.

Well run in, and modified you should be able get the backlash down to
less than a thou.
