I agree, that for day-to day use hexapods are still not ready.
But generally, building a hexapod isn't such a big deal.
I hope that someday, when some company starts manufacturing necessary parts
- actuators, joints, platforms at decent price (probably, it will be some
Chinese company=), everyone will be able to build simple and *absolutely
imprecise* base frame and enjoy 5-axis machining. That's the point - no need
for precise and expensive base, all these perpendicular, parallel surfaces
etc. Just put together set of cheap modules, perform calibration - and you
have pretty accurate and precise high speed low-cost machine.
